Cronos is the EVM-compatible blockchain built by Crypto.com, serving as the DeFi layer for one of the largest retail crypto platforms. The Crypto.com user base — millions of retail investors — means Cronos has an unusually high proportion of newer crypto users who may not fully understand DeFi risks. This makes the chain a target for scam operations that exploit less experienced participants. The Crypto.com ecosystem suffered its own security incidents — the January 2022 hack that drained $35 million from user accounts demonstrated that even major exchange platforms face security challenges. While that hack affected the centralized exchange rather than the Cronos chain directly, the incident highlighted the interconnected risk landscape between Crypto.com services and the Cronos ecosystem. Cronos DeFi — primarily VVS Finance, Tectonic, and Mad Meerkat — experienced the same pattern of yield farm exploitation and liquidity manipulation seen on other EVM chains. Low gas fees enabled scam token deployment at scale, and the retail-heavy user base proved particularly susceptible to social engineering. Users who participated in early Cronos DeFi and are now looking to move funds back to Crypto.com or other exchanges need to understand what compliance teams will see in their transaction history.
